The county town of Suffolk, Ipswich is on the River Orwell estuary and is home to 133,000 people.
Ipswich claims to be England’s oldest continuously inhabited town - it was certainly inhabited in Roman times, as the largest Roman villa in Suffolk was located in Ipswich.
In the 7th century, the town was inhabited by Dutch potters and the area became the home of large-scale pottery production with products supplying many areas of England.
In Medieval times, Ipswich was a prosperous place, and a centre for the textile trade. More recently the industries of fertiliser and brewing have been major employers in the town.
Modern Ipswich has been the subject of significant development, especially the Waterfront District which is now an upmarket residential and leisure area.
Visitors may be interested in visiting Sutton Hoo where the National Trust have a visitor centre detailing the Anglo-Saxon burial site and the many treasures found by archaeologists on the site.
