With a population of nearly 125,000 people, High Wycombe is Buckinghamshire’s second-largest town (after Milton Keynes), and is 29 miles from London.
The town dates back at least to Roman times, as there is a Roman villa which has been excavated three times. High Wycombe is also mentioned in the Domesday Book.
In Medieval times, High Wycombe was a mill town, and produced linen and lace. By the 17th century the paper industry arrived in the town as the waters of the River Wye are rich in chalk and suitable for bleaching the paper pulp.
By the 19th century, furniture making was one of High Wycombe’s main industries with lots of factories setting up to make design’s like the famous Windsor Chair. At one stage is was estimated that more than 4,000 chairs were being made in the town every day.
The furniture industry declined in the 1960s, but the town has been re-developed with new housing developments and the creation of town centre shopping facilities such as the Eden Shopping centre.
Visitors can take a trip to Hughenden Manor, or see the animals at nearby Odds Farm Park.
