Designated Britain’s first UNESCO City of Design, Dundee is Scotland’s fourth largest city - and is home to nearly 150,000 people.
Dundee is also known as the “City of Discovery” as a tribute to the RRS Discovery - Scott’s Antarctic exploration ship which was built in Dundee and has now returned to the city as a visitor attraction.
In the 19th century, Dundee was the centre of the world’s jute trade, with 62 jute mills employing around 50,000 people. Other major industries in the city were James Keiller’s and Sons who were the first firm to make marmalade commercially in 1795, and newspaper publishers DC Thomson - hence why the city is known for “Jute, Jam and Journalism”.
Sadly the city is also known for the Tay Bridge Disaster when the Tay Rail Bridge collapsed in 1879 - only 18 months after it opened - as a train was passing over, with the loss of 75 lives.
Although the jute industry has declined, American firms like NCR and Timex have moved in to the town, and in the 21st century it’s become a hub for the computer games industry.
Today you can visit Scott’s RRS Discovery, explore Dundee’s industrial past at Verdant Works, or climb Dundee Law and enjoy the spectacular views.
