Blackpool is Britain’s favourite seaside resort, and is situated in Lancashire, in the North of England, on the Irish Sea Coast. It is only 40 miles from Manchester and 27 miles north of Liverpool.
Since the 1840’s Blackpool’s main industry has been tourism, and this remains the case today. As well as the 7 mile long sandy beach, there are many tourist attractions to visit in the town. For this reason, tourism, hospitality and its associated services are the main employers in the area, along with the retail outlets in the centre of the town.
As it is in the North of England, Blackpool does not have particularly warm summers, but it does benefit from a temperate maritime climate, with a small variation in temperature throughout the year - the coldest night averages -7.6 degrees C, and the average warmest day in summer is 28.1 degrees C.
Among Blackpool's many tourist attractions, Blackpool Tower, The North Pier, The Grand Theatre, the Tramway along the promenade and the Pleasure Beach are the most popular.
The Pleasure Beach is a large amusement park set directly on the seafront, with many exciting and thrilling rides. During the summer and autumn months, the Blackpool Illuminations put on a stunning display of six miles of coloured lights along the seafront, and one of the best ways to see them is by riding on a tram!
The shopping needs of both visitors and locals are met in a variety of shopping streets in the centre of the town, and the Houndshill Shopping Centre, which contains many of the major nationwide stores.
