Sittingbourne & Milton Regis Golf Club
Sittingbourne, Kent
18th green
The course is semi-woodland, with the front nine being tree-lined and the back nine a little more open, although the many trees planted in recent years are now beginning to mature and blend in with the front nine layout.
The Club was founded in 1929 and has seen many changes, not least of which was the building of the A249, which required the Club to acquire additional land to replace the holes lost to the new road.
The Club eventually benefited from this, with 7 new holes designed by Donald Steel being built on better quality land and with modern free-draining greens.
The course is not long (6295 yards off white tees), by modern standards, but demands accurate tee shots and a good short game to score well.
The first hole is a challenging par 4, being 418 yards, uphill and into the prevailing wind, whilst the second hole offers an opportunity for a birdie on this 482 yard par 5.
Other holes of interest include the 3rd hole, where the drive is directly over the road, to a green which is often in range. The 5th hole is a tough par 4, being 442 yards and uphill. The 13th hole calls for an accurate tee shot, as the fairway appears to almost disappear between 2 bunkers at around driving distance.
The 15th is an excellent par 3 at 208 yards, downhill and calling for a really well hit shot to avoid the large bunker and find the green.
The 18th is an excellent finishing hole that tempts players to attack this par 5 in 2 shots, although the green offers a very small landing area and is well protected by bunkers. With trees down both sides of the fairway and strategically placed fairway bunkers this hole has often destroyed a good medal card.
A truly enjoyable course offering a great day out, with excellent bar and catering facilities. The Pro Shop is well stocked, with a wide range of equipment and clothing.
