Carlisle is the county town of Cumbria, and is home to more than 70,000 people.
Carlisle’s history goes back to Roman times, when it served the forts along Hadrian’s Wall.
In the Middle Ages, Carlisle continued to be an important military town - Cardiff Castle was built in 1092, and remains remarkably intact to this day.
During the Industrial Revolution, Carlisle became a mill town, involved in the manufacture of textiles.
With the coming of the railways, Carlisle benefited from excellent transport links, as no less than seven different railway companies served the town.
As Cumbria’s only city, Carlisle is popular with shoppers from the surrounding countryside. It’s well known for the “Lanes” shopping centre which has more than 70 shops.
As well as the castle, visitors will want to see Carlisle Cathedral - and may be interested to learn more about the city and its history by visiting Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery.
Alternatively, why not enjoy a day at the races, at Carlisle Racecourse which stages both National Hunt meetings from September to April and Flat races from April to August.
