Gateshead in Tyne and Wear is on the south bank of the River Tyne, opposite Newcastle upon Tyne, and it’s home to more than 120,000 people.
The site of the modern Swing Bridge marks the spot where people first settled in this area in Roman times.
Gateshead grew as coal was mined in this area in the 14th and 15th centuries - and expanded quickly during the Industrial Revolution. Gateshead became known for the manufacture of wire and cables and building locomotives.
Gateshead has seen lots of re-development and new building in recent years, such as the Millennium Bridge, The Sage Gateshead venue and the Angel of the North sculpture which celebrates the area’s industrial heritage.
